Layer Home Truths: International Women’s day

Layer Home Truths: International Women’s day

On Tuesday evening, I attended a design event hosted by Layer Home at The Hoxton in celebration of  International Women’s day. It was a privilege to hear from 4 inspirational women in design, especially since I have started to explore my design passion through apartment-19.

The four design gurus were:

1. Sophie Ashby of Studio Ashby

2. Fiona Livingstone of StudioFibre

3. Sofia Hagen of Design Haus Liberty

4. Emma O’Kelly, Editor-at- large at Wallpaper magazine

It was great to hear about where they get their design inspiration from, why the love interior design and what it’s like to work in the design industry. It was interesting to hear about design from a  different perspective; journalism, architecture, residential and business/commerical.

I have always loved the work by Studio Ashby and I like how Sophie Ashby incorporates her South African heritage into her projects, through fabrics and art. Her work is outstanding and the way she works with different colour palettes, but manages to bring it altogether into one space is amazing.

Fiona Livingstone gave us some insight into what it’s like to work on the business side of design. She has an impressive roster of clients such as Farfetch, Net-a-porter and Anya Hindmarch. Crazy right?StudioFibre is also a husband and wife duo, so it was interesting to hear about what it’s like to work in the design space with your spouse.

Sofia Hagen attended the event in place of Dara Huang who founded Design Haus Liberty. It would have been great to meet Dara, but hearing about Sofia’s past experiences was really really cool. She had the opportunity to learn from the likes of Zaha Hadid, which sounded incredible because that’s a once in a lifetime experience one could never forget.

It was also really interesting to hear from Emma O’Kelly, because she channels her passion for interior design through journalism mostly. This resonated with me in its entirety since I have just started this blog and I need all the advice I can get ! I really like wallpaper magazine and I’m always checking out the website and looking at the latest trends and travel locations!

It was a really really good event and I am so glad I went. I’m getting used to going to events alone. The positive aspect of going alone is that you can meet new people in the field. I was sitting next to the founder of Studio K Design (@studio_k_design), who was lovely and gave me great advice too!

At the end of the event we all had to write down an inspirational quote and give it to the person next to us, and I received this:

On that note, Happy International Women’s Day to all the beautiful women out there !!
